1. The Association

74 dog handlers of the Swiss Army (including Air Force and Border Guard Command) founded the Swiss Armed Forces Working Dog Association (Verein Schweizerischer Militärhundeführer - SMF) at the Restaurant Rotes Haus, Brugg, on May 16, 1987. WO1 Peter Huwyler, head of the Swiss Army's working dog agency (part of the Veterinary Services) has been appointed as the chairman of the day and Capt Ruedi Gantenbein has been elected by the members as its president (until 1995). Major GS Dan Aeschbach, DVM, is since 2007 president of the SMF.

Today, there are more than 400 members with the SMF; the following regional groups spread over Switzerland provide realistic and mission related trainings to its K9 teams weekly, organize tests, championships and demonstrations to the public, recruit new members and cultivate friendship within the comunity:

  • Zentralschweiz
  • Ostschweiz

2. Regional Group (RG) "Zentralschweiz"

Erich Hodel, Air Force Security at AFB Emmen, manages the RG Zentralschweiz. Erich is a licensed decoy and owns two working dogs (German Shepherd and Malinois).
